Bankers are euphoric now that interest rates have risen after a protracted period of the lowest rates in their lifetimes. This “surprise” jump in rates is all positive for bank earnings if all goes as planned. Mini Session: The Evolving Digital and Mobile Lending Landscape
While community banks make nearly half of all the business loans over $500,000, they have largely lost the market of small business and consumer loans under $50,000. Thirty years ago community banks dominated this area, but today they have less than 10% of the small business loan market and less than 5% of consumer loans. The compliant underwriting and delivery processes that serve community banks well for larger loans are partially to blame. They simply make loans under $50,000 unprofitable.
Recently, however, cloud-based technology has provided a new way to efficiently deliver loan services to these markets. Because it is not paper-based, the cost of underwriting and quarterly monitoring is just a few hundred dollars per loan. With digital lending technology, community banks can now be highly efficient and profitable in serving their customers.
